There are all different types of anti aging creams, and different creams perform different functions. Here is a breakdown of the 4 most common types and functions of anti aging creams or their ingredients.

Cleansers:

Cleansers in anti aging creams do just what it sounds like they do – cleanse or clean. They clean off the dirt and make-up and oils and bacteria and anything else that shouldn’t be there off of your face.

Many cleansers out on the market today are simply too harsh on the skin. You don’t need a heavy cleanser on your face like you would on your hands after painting a room in your house. Smooth, supple skin requires gentle treatment. Things like micro-beads and exfoliation, for example, may be good for a now-and-then treatment (like giving your car an oil change) but they’re typically too harsh for most people’s everyday use. Another product that can be harsh on your face are "peels".

Toners:

There are different kinds of toners in anti aging creams. In general, toners remove any traces of dirt, make-up, oils, bacteria etc. remaining on your face after you’ve used a cleanser (or an anti aging cream with a cleanser in it). Beyond that, toners can serve a variety of other purposes.

Some toners restore the protective acid mantle of your skin that can be removed by harsher cleansers. Some toners balance the pH of your skin.

Moisturizers:

Some anti aging creams contain moisturizers. And some moisturizers are standalone anti aging skin care products. Either way, they serve the same purpose – moisturizing dry skin, and replenishing the oils that can be washed off the skin as a natural consequence of using cleansers and toners. Moisturizing your skin regularly keeps it soft and supple and less likely to develop wrinkles or spots.

Exfoliants:

Exfoliants in anti aging creams remove the outer layer of dead skin cells. Unlike cleansers, toners, and moisturizers which can (and should) be used every day – and in many cases twice a day: once in the morning and once at night – exfoliating is good to do about once every two weeks, and certainly no more than once a week. Dead skin cells are damaged cells and should be removed. But living skin cells still have a job to do and shouldn’t be scrubbed so harshly.

No amount of anti wrinkle cream can erase the damage that not enough water and not enough or the right kind of sleep can do to your skin and your facial appearance. The 2 indispensable components of any anti aging skin care program are water and sleep.

Water:

Nothing hydrates your skin like plain water. Nothing.

Coffee, teas, and sodas may have water in them, but they only serve to dehydrate you, requiring you drink even more water than you would have had you not drank the coffee, tea, or soda. Even the purest fruit juices may be healthy for you in other ways, but they do not hydrate you, and therefore do not keep your skin moist, absorptive, smooth, and supple like water does. What’s more, all of your body’s cellular process are aided and improved by being adequately hydrated.

The recommended daily dose of plain water is from 4 to 8 glasses (8 oz. each).

Sleep:

There are two factors related to sleep that affect anti aging skin care. The first is getting enough sleep. The second is sleeping in the most beneficial positions.

Making sure to get enough sleep is a key component in reducing stress which is a predominant cause of aging (and premature aging). Also, when you sleep, your body refreshes and rejuvenates itself, including your organs. And your skin is, after all, your largest organ.

It should be obvious why sleeping on your face is a no-no if you want a youthful, wrinkle-free face. Sleeping on your stomach (or your side, for that matter) can contribute to the kind stretching and creasing of the skin that can later become wrinkles. Less obvious, but just as helpful, is that lying on your back when you sleep eases tension on the skin and muscles of your face, thereby helping to prevent wrinkles.

If you get enough water and sleep on a daily basis, then you may want to consider an anti wrinkle cream. Read our Pure Lift Ultra anti wrinkle cream reviews to find the right one for you.

Dr. Oz, the famed heart surgeon and expert on fitness and nutrition who appears regularly on the Oprah Winfrey Show, has a lot to say on anti aging skin care. What he has to say can essentially be broken down into two categories: diet and creams.

Diet and Nutrition and Anti Aging Skin Care

Dr. Oz says that antioxidants can help reduce wrinkles. Certain fruits like pomegranates, red grapes, and acai berries are high in antioxidants and therefore can help to reduce wrinkles, lines, and spots. Antioxidants also help power the immune system and, in so doing, help the body to better deal with stress (another contributor to aging as you’ll soon read below).

Anti Aging Creams

Dr. Oz recommends several anti aging skin care creams, most particularly eye creams, moisturizers, and facelift creams. With eye creams, Dr. Oz advises not to use them every day, as the skin around the eyes too sensitive to tolerate such frequent treatment. With moisturizers, Dr. Oz advises those products containing collagen and elastin as they are very good for the skin and don’t merely moisten the skin only whilst being applied. With facelift creams, Dr. Oz advises that they make a great all-around anti aging skin care product.

The key ingredients Dr. Oz says to look for in any anti aging skin care creams are:

    * Vitamin A (or Retinol)
    * Vitamin C (or Ascorbic Acid)
    * Vitamin E (or Tocopherol)
    * and to a lesser extent – Niacin.

Dr. Oz also recommends wearing sunscreen on a daily basis to reduce your exposure to UV rays which can speed up the onset of aging and signs of aging.

When all is said and done, however, Dr. Oz’s number one anti aging skin care solution is to reduce your stress level, as stress is the primary factor in aging.

Suddenly in a marketplace filled with anti aging creams of all kinds enters anti aging serums, a seemingly brand new entry into the anti aging skin care market. If you look at the labels of these new serums, you may notice that just like with anti aging creams, the main ingredient in most serums is Vitamin A (usually as Retinol). So what’s so new and improved about them? What is the difference between anti aging creams and anti aging serums, and how do you tell which type of anti aging solution is right for you.

Since most of us are more familiar with anti aging creams than serums, we should start by looking at what a serum is as distinct from the anti aging creams we’re already accustomed to. Anti aging serums used to be strictly the domain of dermatologists and aestheticians, but now you can find these newer variations on the theme – anti aging serums – sold at department stores, drug stores, and discount stores alike, over the counter without a prescription, at all different price (and quality) ranges.

Anti aging serums are designed to produce the same results of anti aging creams, only quicker and more pervasive. Consider it like the skin care equivalent of a "medicated" non-prescription shampoo for your hair. As such, anti aging serums are typically more expensive than anti aging creams.

The "medication" in this instance is usually Argireline, a non-toxic ingredient that acts much like Botox, smoothing out wrinkles and lines. Argireline has even been found to reverse skin damage caused by the sun. Studies have found that people using anti aging serums high in argireline experienced up to a 25% reduction in lines and wrinkles after just one month of use.

In order to have effective results using serums, they must be used continuously. Use serums periodically and you won’t see the desired results. It’s also worth noting that, unlike anti aging skin creams which you just apply and leave alone, many serums require a two-step application process.

If you’re over the age of 35, you may already be showing signs of aging. Fortunately, it’s never too late to begin practicing anti aging skin care to recapture and retain as much of your youthful looking appearance as you can for as long as you can.

As we age, the body produces less and less estrogen. Because of this, our skin becomes more thin and fragile. Other problems that begin to occur with our skin as we age is that it becomes less able to retain moisture, and therefore gets drier easier. It also suffers from a lower production of elastin and collagen.

After the age of 35 our body’s production of the cell-nutrient Coenzyme Q10 also decreases. And there begins to be less pigment to our skin as time goes on.

One thing we produce more of during our lifetime rather than less, however, is free radicals. And while free radical production is a natural and normal part of aging, it is also a major contributor to signs of aging and onset of disease.

A lifetime of exposure to the sun doesn’t help our anti aging skin care effort any. Some studies report that up to 90% of wrinkles come from exposure to the sun.

Exposure to cigarette smoke is another hazard to the skin that builds progressively over time. As are all those years of eating greasy, fatty foods. Both practices cause clogging of the pores, making skin dry and fragile and prone to wrinkles. One of the best things you can do for your health on every level, including for anti aging skin care, is to eliminate cigarette smoke – firsthand and secondhand – from your life. And another is to eat a healthier diet void of oily and fatty foods.

There are a bevy of anti aging skin care products for sale on the market these days – both on the internet and in stores across the land. And not only are they not all created equally (as in some are better than others) but there’s a vast variety of different kinds of anti aging skin care products, and the right one for someone else may not necessarily be the right one for you.

An important thing people forget too look at when evaluating which anti aging skin care products to buy is – ironically enough – their face. But you must, in order to find the right anti aging skin care products for you. You need to look in the mirror and identify the specific areas that you feel need work. Chances are your entire face isn’t covered with lines and wrinkles, so you shouldn’t expect your anti aging skin care products to clear your entire face equally.

Different anti aging skin care products target different "problem areas" on the face – forehead, cheeks, chin, eyes, mouth, throat, etc – and other areas of the body, for that matter. Buying the most effective anti aging skin care products for you means buying the one or ones that target those parts of your face and/or body where you have lines and wrinkles you want erased.

The other thing to notice is your skin type. Do you have dry skin or oily skin. And what’s more, does one part of your face or body have dry skin while another part has oily skin. Different anti aging skin care products are made for different types of skin types. Finding the right one for you also means finding the one that targets the skin type of the area on your face or body that it’s supposed to clear.
